Thursday we got the news that changed everything. After we left the hospital, we picked up Jude and then went to the boy's school for our scheduled Parent Teacher Interviews. It felt like we were walking through a fog.. I still couldn't process everything that had just happened. We told the boy's teachers about everything, briefly, and then went home.
James is supposed to be taking it easy, with restrictions of no running, jumping, sports, gym, recess play, etc. On Friday, we decided he would go to school for the morning, see his classmates and say goodbye, but that I would pick him up before lunch, so he didn't have to sit out from playing at lunch and gym, which he had in the afternoon. When I got to the school to pick him up, he asked if he could stay an extra 10 minutes, as his class were making him cards. I agreed, and asked to speak to the Principal. I wanted to let her know that James would be out for 2-3 weeks, and potentially months. I also wanted to ask her to keep an eye on Jude, as we assumed things would be tough for him, with me not being home for a few weeks while at the hospital. I ended up crying the whole time. Our neighbour, who taught James for grades P and 1 was texting me, as she heard about things, and came up to the office to chat. She offered to come to our house and read, write, and chat in French with James throughout this time. James' entire class walked him up to the office to meet me, and hugged him, it was really sweet.
Did I mention this is the final weekend of my Master of Educational Technology Diploma? I have 2 huge papers, a reflection, and a peer evaluation all due Sunday at midnight. I did not want to ask for an extension, as I wanted to get it over with, so I could focus on James. I was mostly done the 2 papers, but not completely. I spent the majority of Friday afternoon / evening and Saturday working on everything. I had everything submitted on Saturday, because Sunday was going to be busy.
Sunday came and we arranged for both boys to go to their friend's houses to play, while Jon and I ran errands and prepped for an extended hospital stay. Some of my friends sent a package to our house with Lego, games, and activities for James to do while in bed at the hospital.
We needed: cozy blanket for my bed (James has one), snacks & groceries, mesh laundry basket, additional charger, Nintendo Switch lite, books, new PJs for both James and I. As James will be in traction, he needs shorts to sleep in, and his ones from last year do not fit. Most of my PJs are old leggings / shirts, and I want something a bit nicer as I know people will be in and out of our room throughout the night.
We went to bed Sunday night knowing it will be our last normal night for awhile.
